Peru PM presents confidence motion at Congress

14:02 | Lima, Sep. 30.

Prime Minister Salvador del Solar addressed Congress on Monday to introduce a confidence motion with the purpose of changing the modality used to select the Constitutional Court members.

"On account of our concerns, we have submitted a bill to Congress aimed at ensuring a transparent process so, on behalf of the Council of Ministers, I present a confidence motion at this moment," the high-ranking official expressed.

During the Congress plenary session, the Cabinet chief remarked that the Parliament has the right to elect the Constitutional Court members.

However, he pointed out that the process must be transparent in order to guarantee a wise selection.

In this sense, Del Solar recalled that the Constitutional Court is the highest institutional entity that ensures respect for the Constitution, the protector of citizens' fundamental rights, and the referee between branches of government.

"The Constitutional Court is so important for a country that the election of its magistrates —through a transparent process— is essential," the Prime Minister underlined.

Likewise, he urged lawmakers to decide on the confidence motion on this very day.
