Peru President confirms 263 coronavirus cases

13:17 | Lima, Mar. 20.

President Martin Vizcarra on Friday afternoon confirmed that 263 citizens tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) in Peru —out of a total of 4,298 samples.

In this sense, the Head of State indicated that 28 people are hospitalized and 5 remain in intensive care units (ICU).

Likewise, the top official said coronavirus is easily infected. Therefore, it is up to everyone to prevent it from happening.

Within this framework, the statesman affirmed that it is time to put aside any differences and remain united to face the COVID-19 —thus referring to the fact that there have been disputes between some local and regional authorities.

"The State powers must remain united," Mr. Vizcarra emphasized after calling on citizens to abide by mandatory social isolation and be supportive by taking care of one another.

He mentioned that —to date— the mandatory social immobilization (curfew) from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. is leading to better results, but the expected result is yet to be reached.

Lament

"The death of four people is a tragic event, which hurts not only the relatives, but also all Peruvians," the Head of State expressed.

This situation, he said, leads to ratifying the efforts that authorities, institutions, and the entire population must carry out to better face this pandemic.

The top official recalled that —since the work against coronavirus started— the Government projected that it would be a difficult and complex task. However, his administration aims at making progress on the matter.

"This epidemic is advancing rapidly because contagion is very easy, and it is only up to us to try to prevent it," he added.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Friday marks the fifth day of mandatory social isolation decreed by the Government.
