The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Wednesday participated in the commemoration ceremony for the 196th Anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho, which took place in the Historic Sanctuary of Pampa de la Quinua.

The President was joined by Congress Chairwoman Mirtha Vasquez, some State ministers, and high military commanders on the occasion.

History

On a day like today, in 1824, the Battle of Ayacucho was fought. Under the leadership of Antonio Jose de Sucre, the United Liberation Army of Peru achieved a victory that consolidated its independence.

The patriot victory forced Viceroy Jose de la Serna to sign a capitulation.

In the document, Jose de Canterac —who was in command of the royalist army— accepted the withdrawal of Spanish troops from Peru.

The capitulation consists of 18 agreements, including the handover of the entire territory.
