Peru President: At least 60% of COVID-19 patients have recovered

14:10 | Lima, Jun. 24.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday assured that more than 60% of the 264,689 people, who had tested positive for the new coronavirus (COVID-19), received the medical discharge.

Within this framework, the Head of State said the trend observed two weeks ago "gives us courage and hope for the future."

"Today, thanks to the daily figures reported by the Ministry of Health, we can say that of the 264,689 people —who had tested positive— we have determined that more than 60% have recovered, and there are only 104,000 people with the active virus of the 151,589 who have already recovered," he expressed.

The top official assured that the Government has been following up on figures of active and recovered cases for several weeks, which climbed from 20% to 30% and continue to increase gradually.

"(…) The fact that recovered people reached 50% of the total number of infected people gave us satisfaction. Currently, recovered people are in the order of 60%," he indicated.

Likewise, the statesman said this trend is clearly seen in some regions of the country, where a decrease curve is witnessed. However, the same does not occur in others and —therefore— a comprehensive analysis is necessary.

"Today, after 100 days, we can see that we are starting to have results due to the great efforts that we all have made," he added.

In this sense, the statesman recalled that the Government had absolutely clear objectives since March 15 —the day on which the decision was made to establish a state of emergency and close the borders.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Wednesday marks the one-hundred-first day of mandatory social isolation in Peru.
