Peru PM urges Congress to show clear signs against impunity

12:10 | Lima, Jul. 22.

Peruvian Prime Minister Salvador del Solar has affirmed it is necessary for Congress to correct the Constitution Commission's decision concerning the parliamentary immunity bill, adding this is a setback in the fight against impunity.

Congress' decision states that Parliament maintains the power to lift the immunity of Congress members and demands a firm verdict from the Judiciary in order to approve it.

According to the cabinet chief, Peruvians associate parliamentary immunity with impunity. Thus, it is necessary to reverse this situation in order to regain the population's trust in politics.

"Parliament has the opportunity to show a clear sign and say: we have nothing to hide," he expressed.

In this sense, Del Solar explained the Constitution Commission's decision grants constitutional rank to the treatment Congress gave to former lawmaker Edwin Donayre last May, whose lifting of immunity took over eight months, delaying his appearance before justice for the crimes attributed to him.

The former Army General was expelled from Congress for having stolen fuel from a military unit in Tacna region, while he served as its head in 2006. However, Donayre escaped justice and is currently a fugitive. He is included in the country's Most Wanted List.
