Peru: PM in favor of making public Odebrecht collaboration agreement

12:27 | Lima, Jul. 2.

Peruvian Prime Minister Salvador del Solar on Tuesday affirmed he is in favor of making public the collaboration agreement signed between the Public Ministry and the Brazilian Odebrecht corporation.

According to the high-ranking official, doing so would put citizens at ease.

In this sense, Del Solar recalled the High-Level Anti-Corruption Commission (CAN) recommended the Prosecutor's Office to make public the accord, as long as it does not affect the investigations on the cases involving the construction company.

This deal was intended to procure evidence and testimonies for the investigation of corruption cases in the Inca country, as well as to enable the Peruvian State to collect a large sum of money in reparations.

However, the clauses are kept secret by the Public Ministry, which is independent from the Executive Branch in Peru.

It should be noted Prosecutor Carlos Puma —member of the Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group— is in favor of making the accord public, as it has already been ratified by the Judiciary

Remarks were made after the Parliament's Constitution Commission meeting ended.

Collaboration agreement

As is known, the Brazilian construction giant admitted to having paid millions in bribes to government officials in Peru, in order to secure public-works contracts.

Therefore, Odebrecht benefited from over US$143 million between 2005 and 2014 in Peru, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

In addition, four ex-Presidents have been linked to the Brazilian company such as: Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), Alan Garcia (2006-2011), Ollanta Humala (2011-2016), and Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018)
