Peru PM: Country's agenda needs to generate consensus

11:04 | Lima, Jan. 30.

Peruvian Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos on Thursday said that —although each political party that will shape the new Congress has important issues to promote— there is a country's agenda, which must generate the greatest possible consensus.

"It is not a matter of raising topics, but of articulating thematic axes for the sake of the country. Here we are not going to insist on the leading roles of one or another constitutional body such as Parliament or the Executive Branch," he expressed.

"(…) Each one has its own agenda, but there is a country's agenda that must necessarily motivate the greatest possible consensus," the dignitary told Radio Nacional.

Likewise, Minister Zeballos affirmed that deadlines "are quite short" in the Congress of the Republic. In March, Parliament members must take up duties until July next year, while this October Peru's President must call for the 2021 general elections.

Furthermore, the cabinet chief expressed confidence in finding the best willingness in the new parliamentary groups, although he said it was necessary to recognize that in the course of the political debate —during the last few weeks— various thematic axes were put on the table matching those of the Executive Branch.

Similarly, he assured that once the new Congress is installed, the cabinet will arrive at Congress to report not only on the enacted urgency decrees, but also on the acts that would have been decided during the period of parliamentary interregnum.

The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following the dissolution of Congress.
