Peru PM: Confidence motion's goal is to achieve reforms

11:13 | Lima, Sep. 17.

Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva on Monday affirmed the confidence motion introduced last Sunday by Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra is aimed at achieving the four reforms —submitted by the Executive Branch to Parliament— and not closing Congress.

Furthermore, Villanueva said that on Wednesday he will attend Congress —joined by Cabinet members— to directly submit the confidence motion so it will be debated and assessed

"The main goal is to achieve the four reforms in the procedural way established by law," he told ATV local channel.

In this sense, the official explained Peru needs a new CNM in charge of appointing judges in the Inca country.

"Peru has been harmed, and we are willing to work within the constitutional framework (…)," he added.

Therefore, Congress should adjust its schedule and approve the aforementioned reforms aimed at holding a referendum on December 8, Villanueva indicated.

"(…) In this situation, the population does not trust Congress, thus this is a great opportunity to reopen dialogue," the official stated.

He went on to add it would be ideal if Parliament were to make a decision about the confidence motion on Wednesday.

"There is a lack of will, but we believe the schedule can be speeded up. The proposals are simple, and citizens can say yes or no through the referendum," Villanueva said.

Likewise, he pointed out the decision to introduce the confidence motion was made after what had happened at the Justice Commission last Friday.

As is known, Fuerza Popular party members had decided to abstain in the voting process of the CNM reform project, which prevented its approval.

Lastly, Villanueva affirmed the Head of State is not considering running in the 2021 presidential elections.
