Peru launches campaign to promote domestic coffee consumption

18:09 | Jaen (Cajamarca region), Oct. 24.

Peruvian Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgar Vasquez on Thursday launched a national campaign aimed at boosting domestic coffee consumption.

Within the framework of the 4th International Fair of Special Coffees of Peru (Ficafe), held in the northern city of Jaen, the official pointed out Peruvian coffee is highly valued around the world, adding it is necessary for Peruvians to regain the habit of consuming this important product.

For that reason, he indicated that the first step of this initiative was the presentation of a promotional video created by Peru's Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru).

Likewise, the minister mentioned that —thanks to coordinations with PromPeru— 10 buyers from the Americas and Asia arrived in Jaen (Cajamarca region) to participate in the business round that will take place during the fair.

On the other hand, buyers from the United States, Argentina, Chile, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates will hold business meetings with 19 coffee exporters, mainly small- and medium-scale cooperative producers.

FICAFE is part of the promotion plan of sectoral brand Coffees from Peru based on PENX 2025, MiPyme al Mundo (My micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises to the World) Program, and the Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry's (Minagri) National Coffee Plan.

It should be noted nine countries account for 86% of total coffee production in the world. Peru is one of them. Between January and August, its coffee exports totaled US$263 million.

The main destinations are the U.S., Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Canada, Colombia, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, and South Korea.

Four years of FICAFE

The 1st FICAFE took place in 2015, promoted by district, provincial, and regional governments of the central jungle (Pasco and Junin region), as well as coffee organizations from said locations.

The current event takes place from October 24 thru 27.
