Peru Interior Min: Government is intolerant towards corruption

14:26 | Lima, Apr. 27.

The recently-sworn-in Minister of Interior Gaston Rodriguez on Monday affirmed that the Government of President Martin Vizcarra is intolerant toward any acts of corruption, particularly those that could occur in the current situation of emergency due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in Peru.

The high-ranking official recalled that this was one of the main missions entrusted to him by the Head of State when he accepted the post last week. The other topic of relevance was the need for the Peruvian National Police (PNP) personnel to be treated well.

"I have to make clear that the Government of President Martin Vizcarra does not even accept an ounce of corruption, and we are in the same direction. When I was appointed (minister), one of the things he said to me was that, and that there is no tolerance for any kind of corruption or indiscipline," he expressed.

The cabinet member informed that —following the information denouncing alleged acts of corruption within the PNP— it was arranged that purchases in a state of emergency be centralized by the Interior Ministry management.

"I have signed various letters, one addressed to the Comptroller General Nelson Shack (for him) to follow up on the purchases that have been made; likewise, we sent them (other letters) to the Internal Control Office of the (Interior) Ministry and the PNP for them to act immediately," he indicated.

Moreover, Rodriguez mentioned that he sent a communication to the Interior Ministry's Integrity Office, so that —within 24 hours— it can issue a report on the complaints regarding alleged wrongdoings committed by a group of police members in the purchases made during the COVID-19 emergency.

"We cannot expect these types of situations that have repercussions, not only on the public opinion, but also on the (State-run) institutions themselves," he added.

Lastly, he specified that replacements of high-ranking police officers are being evaluated —a decision that will be made in the coming hours.

As is known, Gaston Rodriguez was sworn in last Friday to lead the Interior Ministry. Thus, he replaces former Minister Carlos Moran.
