Peru to impose exemplary punishment for corruption during COVID-19 emergency

14:13 | Lima, Apr. 20.

Corruption acts —committed during the state of national emergency linked to coronavirus (COVID-19)— will be punished in an exemplary way, Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra announced on Monday.

The Head of State reported that the Comptroller's Office relies on S/30 million (around US$8.8 million) to concurrently control the actions carried out in the context of the emergency.

According to the top official, there is no justification whatsoever for bad Peruvians who try to take advantage of the current national emergency to obtain benefit in an illegal manner.

The statesman remarked that —even though these acts can occur in various State sectors, in regions, municipalities, or ministries— the Government's decision is to pursue and punish them to the full extent of the law.

Remarks were made in a televised press conference, within the framework of a mandatory social isolation imposed to prevent the COVID-19 from further spreading in the South American country.

On this occasion, the President was joined by some members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Monday marks the thirty-sixth day of mandatory social isolation.
