Peruvian farming sector expanded 7.2% in February 2019, compared to the same month last year, despite the problems caused by weather phenomena, Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry (Minagri) informed on Wednesday.
According to Minagri's Policy Monitoring and Evaluation Directorate General (DGSEP), this outcome was underpinned by the
agricultural (+9.2%) and livestock (+4.7%) sub-sectors.
In this sense, the agricultural sphere's increase was driven by a greater production of blueberries (+219%; in La Libertad and Lambayeque regions), grapes (+33.5%; Ica and Piura regions), cacao (+26.7%; Ucayali region), sugar cane (+23.3%; La Libertad, Ancash, and Arequipa regions), paddy rice (+8.2%; Amazonas, Ancash, and San Martin regions), among other products.
Meanwhile, the livestock sub-sector rose 4.7%, compared to the same month in 2018. This result was mainly boosted by a greater production of chicken (+5.2%; Lima, La Libertad, and Arequipa regions), eggs (+14.7%; Ica, Lima, La Libertad regions), raw milk (+2.9%; Cajamarca, La Libertad, and Arequipa regions), and pork (+3.9%, Lima and Ica regions).
First two months
On the other hand, Minagri indicated the
farming sector expanded 5.3% between January and February this year, compared to the same period in 2018.
This outcome was also underpinned by the agricultural (+5.7%) and livestock (+4.8%) spheres.
