Specialists conducted fieldwork at the Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu and along the Inca Road Network as part of the new carrying capacity and limits of acceptable change study, which seeks to improve management of this important sanctuary and archaeological park.
The DDC reported that experts from the company A.R.S. Progetti S.P.A. collected the information and data needed to carry out the technical analyses and assessments that will support a new visitor-capacity proposal for the cultural heritage site.
"This new proposal calls for adaptive management based on indicators, prevention, and ongoing assessment, allowing timely information to be available for decision-making and ensuring the conservation of the heritage," said Cesar Medina, acting head of the archaeological park.
Before the fieldwork, the specialists presented the main aspects related to information technology and territorial information systems, as well as the multisectoral data requirements needed to carry out the technical and legal analyses.
Representatives of the Ministry of Culture, the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the Peruvian State (Sernanp), the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Cusco's Regional Management of Foreign Trade, Tourism, and Handicrafts (Gercetur), the Superintendence of Ground Transportation of People, Cargo, and Goods (Sutran), and the Supervisory Agency for Investment in Public Transportation Infrastructure (Ositran) took part in the session.
Institutions involved in rail transportation between Cusco and Machu Picchu also participated.

According to the methodological proposal, the new study will comprehensively assess the more than 30,000 hectares of Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary (Machu Picchu National Archaeological Park) and its area of influence, under a dynamic model that prioritizes the preventive conservation of cultural and natural heritage.
As part of the work, the specialists conducted an initial review of the available information on visitor entry and flow at Machu Picchu.
This analysis will provide integrated and comparable data from the various institutions involved in managing the sanctuary.
The study includes the use of technological tools to improve monitoring of visitors and the conditions of the sanctuary, so that authorities have timely information to adopt measures that contribute to proper management and, above all, the conservation of Machu Picchu.
