Peru Def Min: We need to revive the economy without neglecting protection

16:58 | Lima, Jun. 5.

Defense Minister Walter Martos on Friday affirmed that the gradual resumption of economic activities must take place without neglecting protection protocols against COVID-19 in order to avoid further contagion in Peru.

"The idea is to continue working without increasing the level of contagion in the country," he expressed.

The Cabinet member recalled that the first phase of action —to face the pandemic— consisted of containment based on social isolation, health system improvement, and protection measures, such as the use of face masks and permanent washing.

Concerning the second phase —which is currently underway— he affirmed that the economy needs to be reactivated but under a different approach. That means not only staying at home, but also remaining protected whenever there is a need to go outside.

For this reason, citizens must comply with protocols and care for the vulnerable ones, said the minister.

Currently, the State monitors the fight against the pandemic in a more focused way, with the Armed Forces operating in markets, bus stops, and banks, and the Ministry of Health implementing an early treatment strategy at homes.

It must be noted Phase 2 of the economic reactivation began today in Peru, and there is a lot of expectation towards the resumption of some activities in order to generate the resources needed to afford the expenses and contribute to the dynamism of the country's economy.
