The
Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) awarded the contract to the company that will update the
Machu Picchu llaqta's carrying capacity study, a key process for determining—based on technical and scientific criteria—the actual number of visitors the Wonder of the World and Peru's leading tourist attraction can receive.
This announcement was made by Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Berthin Gomez on Thursday, during the presentation ceremony of Marca Peru (Peru Brand) at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco.
The minister reported that Mincetur is currently in the stage prior to signing the contract, which is scheduled for the second half of July.
"Yesterday (Wednesday, July 8), the contract was awarded to the company that will be in charge of updating the Machu Picchu carrying capacity study," he announced.
Investment worth nearly S/3 million
The minister said the study will require an investment of nearly S/3 million (about US$881,000) and is expected to take 190 calendar days to complete.

The government official explained that the goal is to have technical information that makes it possible to determine the actual number of visitors the Inca citadel can receive, while ensuring its conservation and proper tourism management.
"With an investment of nearly S/3 million over 190 calendar days, we will be able to obtain clear information on the actual number of visitors the Machu Picchu llaqta can receive," he stated.
The Cabinet member also reiterated that the selection process has already concluded, adding that the next step will be signing the contract with the awardee.
"We will have the opportunity to determine, on a technical basis, what the actual carrying capacity of the Machu Picchu citadel will be," he emphasized.
Better experience for tourists
Minister Gomez stressed that Cusco maintains its position as one of the world's most important tourist destinations thanks to its many international recognitions.
In that context, he stated that Mincetur is working in coordination with authorities and stakeholders in the sector to ensure a quality experience for domestic and foreign visitors.
"We are making every effort in coordination with the stakeholers involved to welcome tourists in the best possible manner and ensure that their experience is truly wonderful," he said.
Peru Brand arrives at Cusco airport
During the ceremony, the minister highlighted the installation of the Peru Brand at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport.
The authority noted that it serves as a strategic showcase for promoting the country's image to millions of travelers.
He indicated that the airport received 4.8 million passengers in 2025, making it one of the most visible spaces for showcasing Peru's cultural, gastronomic, tourism, and productive wealth.
"Having the Peru Brand present at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport means harnessing one of the country's most visible spaces to convey what sets us apart: our cultural diversity, landscapes, gastronomy, exportable offerings, and the spirit of a country that welcomes the world with pride and hospitality," Gomez expressed.
The minister added that strengthening airport infrastructure and connectivity not only favors passenger travel, but also boosts tourism, trade, and regional economic development.
At another point, the Executive Branch representative reported that the transfer process at Mincetur has already formally begun.
He specified that the sector has already received the transfer commission, adding that the installation records for the incoming and outgoing teams have already been signed.
"What we intend is to carry out an effective, transparent, and timely transfer," Gomez pointed out.
