Peru and the Netherlands signed on Thursday the Agreement on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Customs Matters, an instrument that will strengthen the international trade supply chain's security and enhance the capabilities of both countries' customs institutions.

The government agency reported that the agreement was signed by Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Pareja and Dutch Ambassador Alexander Kofman, in the presence of National Superintendent of Customs and Tax Administration Javier Franco.

The ceremony was held in Callao to mark the departure of the Dutch vessel Bark Europa following maintenance work at the Navy Industrial Services (SIMA) facilities.

Minister Pareja stressed that the agreement will expand economic cooperation, boost trade and investment flows, and open new areas for collaboration.

In that regard, it is worth noting that the Netherlands is the second-largest destination for Peru's exports within the European Union.

Gateway to Europe

"The Netherlands is a strategic partner for Peru. Its ports serve as one of the main gateways to the European market," the Cabinet member stated.

"Thanks to their outstanding logistics infrastructure and strategic location, they play an essential role in the international integration of our exports," he added.

In turn, the Dutch ambassador highlighted the strong partnership between the two countries, noting that cargo security supports the continued growth of maritime trade with Dutch ports.

The agreement will facilitate the exchange of information between customs authorities, streamline the flow of legitimate trade, combat customs-related offenses more efficiently, as well as help advance more modern and transparent procedures.
