The incoming Minister of Economy and Finance, Elmer Cuba, said Monday that the incoming Government's goal is to ensure Peru's economic growth translates into better jobs, higher wages, and adequate public services.
"I have accepted the invitation to join this Government with high expectations and a strong commitment to moving Peru forward over the next five years and carrying out the economic reforms the country has awaited throughout this century," he stated.
Cuba noted the objective is for Peru to return to healthy economic growth, generate jobs and tax revenue, enabling the Peruvian State to invest in equal opportunities, close infrastructure gaps, and steer the country toward development.
Macroeconomic stability
Elmer Cuba indicated that Peru has been making progress, but noted that the most difficult part still lies ahead.
"We have achieved macroeconomic stability, low inflation, and fiscal soundness, but the population has not yet felt that growth reflected in their wages and well-being," he said.
Therefore, the incoming minister stressed that the goal over the coming years is to ensure that this growth is reflected in better jobs, higher wages, and better public services throughout the Republic.
Fight against corruption
"We will be relentless in the use of those resources. It is difficult for all Peruvians to pay taxes whenever we purchase any product. We pay the General Sales Tax, income tax, and the Selective Consumption Tax on various products, and it is not fair for anyone to squander those resources," Cuba pointed out.
In that regard, Cuba said efforts will be stepped up to close infrastructure gaps, in addition to maintaining a rigorous fight against corruption throughout the country.
