Over 200,000 Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines arrive in Peru

A new batch of 200,070 vaccine doses against COVID-19 from Pfizer pharmaceutical company landed in the Peruvian capital Lima on Wednesday evening.

Brought by a KLM aircraft from Amsterdam (the Netherlands), the cargo was received by Foreign Trade-Tourism Minister Claudia Cornejo.

On behalf of the Executive Branch,

the Cabinet member explained that the Transition and Emergency Government works continuously and without rest to protect the population from the pandemic.

President Francisco Sagasti's administration signed contracts, so that Peru receives a total of 48 million vaccines, which will arrive progressively during the current year to ensure the immunization of the entire adult population, she indicated.

The Government's commitment —announced weeks ago by Health Minister Oscar Ugarte— is to reach July 28, 2021, with all Peruvians aged above 60 immunized against COVID-19.

Vaccines

To date, Peru has received more than 2.44 million doses to immunize health and security personnel working on the frontline against the pandemic, as well as the population over 80 years of age, whose members are the most vulnerable to the coronavirus.

In addition, 1.09 million AstraZeneca doses will be received in May, to which 2.8 million Pfizer doses will be added. Thus, Peru will rely on around 3.8 million doses next month to protect the population.

"We have signed contracts for 48.7 million vaccines, which will arrive progressively during the course of the year and will ensure the vaccination of the country's entire adult population," Cornejo said.

"The Government continues to negotiate higher doses to vaccinate all Peruvians more than once in case reinforcements are needed," she added.

A recent analysis by the Peruvian College of Physicians (CMP) has shown a marked decrease in the number of doctors, who died and were hospitalized due to COVID-19, following the administration of the second vaccine dose.
