Most Peruvians want referendum to be held before end-2018

The majority of Peruvians want the Government's proposed referendum on political and justice reforms to be debated before Congress as soon as possible, the latest GfK poll revealed Wednesday.

According to the survey, between 59% and 75% of respondents expect the issue can be addressed immediately, while between 69% and 76% of them want the public consultation to be held not later than December.

Proportions are as follows: 75% expect a prompt debate regarding a ban on immediate re-election of lawmakers (16% demand more time); and 64% of those asked have the same urgency for the project to reform the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM), compared to 23% of respondents who want more time.

Likewise, 65% of those surveyed believe private financing of political campaigns should be addressed as soon as possible (22% demand more time to do so), and 59% agree on the urgency of a second chamber in Congress (26% take the opposite view).

Referendum in December

The survey shows that 76% of respondents think the proposal to regulate private financing of political parties must be voted in December, and 15% state the voting should be held next year.

Additionally, 71% believe the CNM issue should be addressed in December, while 18% say 2019 would be better.

On the other hand, 69% of respondents prefer the bicameral parliamentary legislature question be made in the last month of this year, whereas 20% opt for next year.

Finally, 71% agree the referendum on political parties' private financing should be held in December, while another 16% say "next year."
