78% of Peruvians disagree with Congress members' re-election

The latest Datum (Pulso Peru) poll revealed that 78% of Peruvians disagree with the re-election of lawmakers, whereas 18% of them are in favor of this possibility.

Conducted on August 3-7, the survey included this question following President Martin Vizcarra's initiative to hold a referendum to decide a series of reforms, including the re-election of legislators.

The President's proposal was made in his annual address to the nation as part of Peru's 197th Independence Day celebrations.

According to Datum's poll, 67% of the population finds it appropriate to use a referendum to debate some issues like the parliamentary re-election, the return to the bicameral parliamentary system, and political parties' financing.

Likewise, the research shows that 50% of respondents are in favor of moving to a bicameral legislature —a Senate and a Chamber of Deputies— as it existed thru the early 1990's.

It must be noted the bicameral system proposal does not intend to increase the current number of Congress members (130).

On the contrary, 39% of Peruvian nationals believe Parliament should remain as it is, that is to say as a unicameral body with one chamber.
