The Ministry of Foreign Affairs commemorated the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Peru and the People's Republic of China during a ceremony that included the exchange of congratulatory letters between the President of Peru, Keiko Fujimori, and the President of China, Xi Jinping.

Letters were also exchanged between the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Espá and Wang Yi. The Chinese Ambassador to Peru, Song Yang, delivered the communications sent by the Chinese authorities.

Furthermore, as part of the celebration, an academic forum was held to examine the progress and challenges of the bilateral relationship, featuring contributions from Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Eric Anderson and Ambassador Song.

Anderson noted that Peru was one of the first Latin American countries to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China.

He also reaffirmed the commitment to continue strengthening bilateral ties, based on the "one-China" principle, as well as mutual respect and trust.

Additionally, the Director General for Asia and Oceania, Ambassador Marco Balarezo, delivered a presentation that included commentary from Cynthia Sanborn of the Universidad del Pacífico; retired Rear Admiral Carlos de Izcue Arnillas; and Carlos Aquino Rodríguez of the National University of San Marcos (Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos).

Bilateral Relationship

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Peru and China—the country’s primary trading partner—have maintained a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership since 2013. Furthermore, under the 2024–2029 Joint Action Plan, the bilateral agenda includes strengthening trade and investment, as well as fostering cooperation in the fields of science, technology, education, and culture.

The ministry highlighted that the commemoration of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations coincides with the entry into force of the Protocol for the Optimization of the Free Trade Agreement between the two countries, which updates the provisions of the trade agreement in place since 2010.
