Claudio Pizarro scores hat-trick in Bremen’s big win

Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro scored a hat-trick as Werder Bremen returned to winning ways with a thumping victory at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Pizarro put Bremen in control with two goals inside 20 points before Diego made the game safe with a penalty a minute before the break.

Pizarro completed his treble in the 62nd minute and Aaron Hunt heaped further humiliation on the visitors with a fifth in the 75th minute.

Bremen bounced back from their disappointing draw against Anorthosis Famagusta in the Champions League to rack up their third straight home win and move up to seventh in the Bundesliga table, three points off a UEFA Cup spot.

Frankfurt had avoided defeat in three of their last four games going in to the match, but a fourth away loss of the season left them in 12th place, five points from the relegation zone.

Bremen were the better team from the off and went in front in the 11th minute thanks to a counter-attack.

Torsten Frings sent Hugo Almeida racing away down the right wing and the Portuguese passed just in time to Pizarro, who shot first time past Frankfurt keeper Markus Proll.

The hosts doubled their lead just nine minutes later - again after a counter-attack.

Frings released Pizarro down the right and he notched his ninth goal of the campaign with another first-time effort, this time a rising drive past Proll

Frankfurt had a chance to pull a goal back just before the half-hour mark, but could not make the most of a series of corner kicks.

Instead Pizarro nearly bagged his third goal in the 36th minute, but the Peruvian fired just inches wide from 16 yards.

Diego, however, did make it three in the 44th minute with his eighth goal of the season.

Habib Bellaid brought down Hunt in the area and Diego fired the resulting penalty high in to the roof of the net as Proll went to his left.

From then on it was just a question of how many Bremen would score and Pizarro sealed his hat-trick by playing a one-two with Almeida before finishing in to the right corner from five yards.

And Hunt capped an emphatic victory with 15 minutes remaining when he shot home from 16 yards after a long solo run.
