YouTube, Facebook and Netflix, most popular applications among Peruvians in 2022

The applications with the most Internet traffic by the end of 2022 were YouTube, Facebook, and Netflix, which account for 25%, 23% and 18% of the total, respectively, according to a Movistar report.

According to said report, 2022 saw changes in Internet consumption on educational platforms and an increase in the demand for connectivity to entertainment services. 

The demand for Internet doubled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and this persisted after the return to in-person events due to office and educational activities.

At the end of 2022, mobile network traffic grew by 21% compared to the consumption at the end of 2021. 

This figure responds to the natural evolution of users' behavior related to the use of technologies such as streaming.

Regarding the fixed internet service, an aggregate data flow of up to 6,000 GB per second was able to be transmitted.

Increase in streaming consumption in Peru

Streaming, one of the most popular services, retained the top spot, capturing 43% of the total consumption. 

In addition to the popularity of YouTube, Netflix, and Facebook, the latter saw an increase of 6% in 2022.

On the other hand, the consumption of video games was also important. "Our network carries almost 60% of the country's total data traffic," said Christian Livia, Network Operations and Maintenance Director at Movistar.

At the end of 2022, YouTube announced an update to its policies on its official blog. Videos are being uploaded at a rate of more than 500 hours of content per minute.

To measure the effectiveness of our enforcement, YouTube released a metric called violative view rate, which looks at how many views on YouTube come from violative material.

From July through September 2022, that number was 0.10% – 0.11%, which means that for every 10,000 views, between 10 and 11 were of content that violated the Community Guidelines.

Likewise, the platform tracks the number of appeals in response to videos that have been removed (an option available to any creator on YouTube).

During the same period mentioned above, YouTube removed more than 5.6 million violative videos and received 271,000 removal appeals. Upon review of the appeals, YouTube reinstated 29,000 videos.
