U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that President Keiko Fujimori's recent inauguration brings much-needed political stability to Peru.

The statement was made during a phone call in which he reaffirmed his country's commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation.

The U.S. Department of State said Secretary Rubio congratulated Peru's Head of State during a phone call last Thursday, according to a readout released by State Department Spokesperson Tommy Pigott.

"Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori on her inauguration during their July 30 call," the document stated.

Rubio also reaffirmed the commitment of President Donald Trump's administration to deepening ties with Peru in order to strengthen cooperation in combating organized crime, promote trade and investment, and enhance disaster preparedness.

According to the readout, the top U.S. diplomat said the Peruvian President's inauguration brings the political stability the South American country needs.

"Secretary Rubio noted President Fujimori's inauguration brings much-needed political stability to Peru and that stable governance is essential to achieving the security and economic growth needed to improve the lives of the Peruvian people," the text indicated.

Keiko Fujimori, 51, was sworn into office last Tuesday after narrowly defeating Roberto Sanchez in the presidential runoff, succeeding on her fourth attempt to win the Presidency of the Republic.

She has become Peru's ninth Head of State in the past 10 years.
