U.S. current support for Peru reaches US$13 million

The U.S. Embassy in Peru has presented some of the achievements —thru the end of May— in assistance channeled via USAID for Peru's Socios en Salud (Partners in Health) —a project that began in April 2020 and is scheduled to continue until April 2021.

"The United States stands together with Peru to face the COVID-19 pandemic. So far, our support —through USAID Peru— amounts to US$13 million. We will continue to advance and expand this aid," Deputy Chief of Mission Denison Offutt said recently in a Facebook post.

According to the U.S. State DepartmentUS$13 million in total response funding against COVID-19 included US$7 million in new International Disaster Assistance's (IDA) humanitarian assistance for health emergency, water-sanitation, and hygiene.

Likewise, it was made up of US$415,000 in previously-announced Migration and Refugee Assistance's (MRA) humanitarian support for the COVID-19 response for refugees and host communities.

US$3 million came from the previously announced International Economic Support Fund (ESF) for addressing the economic impact of COVID-19 and preventing backsliding on shared, top-level development and security issues —including the fight against illicit drug trade.

Additionally, US$2.5 million was allocated for previously-announced health assistance to provide technical assistance and training in surveillance, the prevention and control of infections in health facilities, risk-communications, and community engagement.

"The United States' strong history of investing in Peru's health and long-term development, through more than US$3.5 billion in total assistance over the last 20 years, including nearly US$265 million for health, has laid the foundation for the country's response to COVID-19," read a release by the U.S. State Department.
