United States Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo on Tuesday expressed his nation's commitment to continue supporting Peru in the fight against the coronavirus (COVID-19), the U.S. State Department has informed.

This commitment —Pompeo reported— was transmitted via phone to Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Gustavo Meza-Cuadra.

The United States has supported Peru's response efforts against COVID-19 with nearly US$6 million to date, he noted.

According to the Chief of U.S. diplomacy, this amount is in addition to the nearly US$265 million in health assistance provided over the last 20 years.

The Peruvian diplomat thanked his counterpart for the cooperation offered to the Inca country, in terms of medical teams to tackle the pandemic and for the commitment to continue working together on issues of regional concern such as the way out of the crisis for Venezuela and the fight against drug trafficking.
