The Official Gazette El Peruano commemorates 200 years of institutional existence this Wednesday, today and becomes the oldest newspaper in circulation in Latin America, whose first edition was in Spanish and English.
The newspaper was founded on October 22, 1825, at the initiative of the liberator Simon Bolivar, it was originally named El Peruano Independiente, a spokesperson for emancipatory ideas. After 19 editions, it was renamed El Peruano, a medium for communicating the government decisions of the nascent Republic of Peru.

El Peruano preserves within its pages the official history of Peru and its relationship with Latin America and the Caribbean. To this end, the newspaper is currently digitizing its editions, which was completed during the period 1826-1965.
"To date, we have digitized more than half a million pages; that is, all the editions of the official newspaper between 1826 and 1965. An additional fact: the newspapers from 2000 to the present have already been digitized; in other words, we are very close to having the entire El Peruano collection digitized," explains its director, Félix Paz Quiroz.
"One aspect worth highlighting is that over these two hundred years, El Peruano has editions in English, French, and Portuguese, and in its pages we can also find content on Peru's relationship with Latin American and Central American countries, and with the world," he added.
Declared a National Documentary Cultural Heritage in Peru, the 19th-century editions of El Peruano are part of UNESCO's Memory of the World Register for Latin America and the Caribbean.

In the pages of El Peruano, we find important historical events such as the abolition of slavery in Peru, advances in women's rights, and the evolution of democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean, among other topics.
Over the course of two centuries, El Peruano has adapted to social, political, and technological changes, evolving from movable type printing to freely accessible digital platforms that today guarantee the immediate dissemination of daily legal and news information.
