President Jose Jeri affirmed today that the law with extraordinary measures against extortion and contract killings in public transportation companies, enacted today at the Government Palace, is a turning point in confronting these crimes and represents a commitment to the sector.
Before leaders of various transportation unions, the president maintained that this measure is one of the most important, resulting from dialogue with the transportation sector.
"Now, we are here at the Government Palace signing what will be this law. It is not enough, it is never enough, but there is a firm decision and a determination that there are turning points. And this turning point is precisely this one, where the commitment we have to the transportation sector is ratified," stated President Jeri.
He also indicated that another clear example of the Government's commitment to combating crime is the creation of the Extortion Investigation Division within the National Police, and he announced that complementary measures will soon be taken within the framework of the state of emergency.
"This government is rapidly understanding the dynamics of criminals, and that is why we are finalizing the new strategies for fighting crime," he asserted.
He added that the Executive Branch is meeting with the public safety managers of the districts affected by this state of emergency to hear, from their technical perspective, the actions that can be taken in each district, especially in those from which transportation companies operate and where there is a higher volume of passengers.
"We are taking daily and immediate measures to rise to the challenge of combating crime. We will not back down, no matter the cost, to defeat crime. You know what it means to say, no matter the cost," he affirmed.
He affirmed that the government will not hesitate to make every effort to defeat crime.
“We know what they do, we know where they are, and now comes the counterattack,” he asserted, adding that it is necessary to restore trust in the institutions that must perform their duties efficiently in order to achieve common goals such as defeating crime.
