President Jose Jeri announced from Cusco, where he oversaw the care provided to those injured in the train accident, that he will convene a meeting of representatives from various sectors to analyze what is needed to improve public and private services for tourists and residents at Machu Picchu.

“There have been proposals from the legislature that have not been successful regarding how to improve services at Machu Picchu. This is a point of reflection to improve how we handle situations like this and to plan for the future,” he stated.

In statements to the press, the head of state said that there had been adequate care and a rapid response to those injured in the train accident on the Ollantaytambo-Machu Picchu route, but in his opinion, “the care could have been more efficient.”

“There was a quick response, but not fast enough to represent Peru to the world. It wasn't fast enough. We must analyze and improve services in both the private and public sectors,” he said.

He stated that this coordination will allow for a better alignment of efforts so that, from now on, when emergencies occur, the State will have a more effective response capacity.

“We have spoken with those affected, and we have also spoken here with other tourists who have been stranded and how they have been assisted, or not. So, that is the fundamental reflection we must consider,” he stated.

The Head of State said that Machu Picchu is the face of our country to the world, and therefore, the best possible service must be provided. That is why the Executive Branch has traveled to Cusco to oversee that everything is functioning optimally.

“I repeat, it’s true, the service wasn’t the most appropriate in terms of timeliness; it could have been faster, it could have been better, yes. But we’re here precisely so that this, from now on, as a point of reflection, will help us improve,” he emphasized.
