Within the framework of the Political Dialogue Mechanism between Peru and the United States, held in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, the aerial interception agreement between both countries came into force.

Similarly, the Memorandum of Understanding that begins its implementation was signed.

As it is an instrument that required approval by the Legislative Branch, in accordance with article 56 of the Peruvian Constitution, it was submitted to Congress on December 14.

The agreement was approved unanimously by the Peruvian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Commission and by a large multi-party majority (73 votes) at a plenary session on April 18.

Under this agreement, cooperation is reestablished that allows for relevant information, financing, radar data, support with command, control-communications, equipment, maintenance, and operational assistance from the United States in order to strengthen the actions of the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) in the fight against illicit drug trafficking.
