Peru's President: Visitor capacity at Machu Picchu to be improved

The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Friday announced that the Government is working to improve the visitor capacity at the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu —located in Peru's southern Cusco region.

Within this framework, the Head of State affirmed that the Government is also working to improve connectivity at Choquequirao, an archaeological monument in Cusco considered the Inca's second Machu Picchu.


"We are improving connectivity and visitor capacity at Machu Picchu and Choquequirao, to encourage the economic development of the population engaged in tourism," she explained.

This morning, the Ministry of Culture (Mincul) reported that it will allow Peruvian visitors over 65 and under 12 years of age to enter the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu free of charge, on presentation of their ID cards, during the National Holidays and the mid-year break.

In the statement, the government agency expressed its apologies for the inconvenience experienced by domestic and foreign tourists who wanted to visit the most important display of Peruvian identity.

The Ministry said that it aims to correct what happened and is committed to the proper protection, exhibition, and promotion of the country's heritage site, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on December 9, 1983, and is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

In her speech, President Boluarte also announced that 4 rapid execution projects have been approved through local governments in the following prioritized destinations: Colca Canyon (Arequipa region), Nazca Lines (Ica region), Inca's Rescue Room (Cajamarca region) and, the Cave of the Owls (Huanuco region).

This event took place at Congress headquarters in the Peruvian capital, Lima.
