The President of the Republic, Jose Jeri, has announced that polygraph tests for National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) personnel begin today, within the framework of the state of emergency currently in force in Lima Metropolitan Area and Callao region.

The Head of State reported that this process will begin at the Lurigancho Prison in Lima.

Likewise, the top official stated that 73 evaluations will be conducted daily.

"Polygraph tests for INPE personnel begin today. The Credibility Units of the National Intelligence Service (SINA) are starting the credibility assessment process. We are beginning at Lurigancho Penitentiary Establishment, with seventy-three (73) evaluations planned per day," he stated on the X platform.

The measure is part of a strategy to combat corruption and insecurity at penitentiary facilities.

"The National Intelligence System will conduct reliability tests using the polygraph on National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) personnel, as well as on other employees or officials designated by the National Citizen Security Council (CONASEC), in accordance with the criteria and procedures established in the current regulations," specifies Supreme Decree No. 124-2025-PCM, which declared the state of emergency.

INPE Chief Ivan Paredes had previously announced that the polygraph test would first be implemented at Lurigancho Prison.

He stated that this effort aims to strengthen internal controls and establish permanent oversight mechanisms for personnel.

The measure arose in response to criticisms that cast doubt on the penitentiary system’s ability to guarantee citizen security.
