The President of the Republic, Keiko Fujimori, on Wednesday expressed her solidarity with Pope Leo XIV.

"I want to express my solidarity with His Holiness Pope Leo. We are pleased to hear that the surgery was successful and that he is recovering," Fujimori stated.

"The diagnosis has caused us great concern, but I want the Pope to know that, from here in Peru, millions of Peruvians are praying for his swift recovery," she pointed out.

The President said she will stay informed about any statements from the Vatican regarding the Supreme Pontiff's health, as his recovery is expected to take several weeks longer than initially anticipated.

"Therefore, we understand that there could be some changes to his visit's schedule. Let us hope that his recovery comes soon, that it is imminent, and that his visit can take place," Fujimori said.

"But we will also understand if the opposite is the case. What is important here is that His Holiness the Pope regains his health," she noted.

She added that all preparations for his visit will continue until further information is received.

Legislative powers

The President urged Congress to resume debate on the legislative powers requested by the Executive Branch as a priority and with urgency after Representation Week, for the benefit of citizens.

"Let us hope that debate on the legislative powers resumes with the priority and urgency the country needs," the top official said.

"Above all, these powers are intended to benefit citizens, and I believe that is the approach senators should now prioritize," she added.

"He is a highly qualified professional with extensive experience, and I know he will play an important role as Peru's future Ambassador to the United States," she stated.

Wildfires

Moreover, the President reported on the Government's response to wildfires following a visit to Cusco region yesterday alongside Cabinet members to assess the affected areas.

The Head of State said the wildfires in Calca had already been brought under control, adding that various decisions were made during the working visit in coordination with the region's governor and local mayors.

The top official noted that the Government is continuously monitoring the situation, with the participation of the Armed Forces and wildfire brigades, which continue to respond to emergencies.

President Fujimori made these remarks after presenting the "Educational Materials Distribution Plan for the 2027 School Year" alongside Education Minister Jose Antonio Chang and Agrarian Development and Irrigation Minister Marco Vinelli.
