The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, on Wednesday highlighted the beginning of a new phase in national integration as he announced projects for Loreto region in the Peruvian Amazon. The Head of State said the initiatives will help launch a true sense of Peruvian integration.

The top official arrived in the city of Iquitos this morning. There, he will carry out a working agenda that includes a Decentralized Council of Ministers session.

"We began with Puno, with our Aymara and Quechua brothers and sisters; now, it is Loreto's turn. We will do so intensively while we remain in government and hand over the baton to the next administration," Balcazar stated.

The Head of State began his agenda by overseeing operations at Coronel FAP Francisco Secada International Airport.

The facility will be modernized through a major investment that, he said, reaffirms the government's commitment to development in the Amazon region.

"Peru has a historic responsibility toward this region and the communities that live there, and that debt is settled through projects and investments that fully connect and integrate the Amazon region," he expressed.

Tender process underway

President Balcazar explained that, through Addendum No. 11 signed between Transportation Ministry and Airports of Peru, US$166 million will be allocated for the runway pavement's refurbishment and improvement, as well as the construction of a new perimeter fence.

"The tender process is already underway, and we expect the contract to be awarded during the third quarter of 2026, so work can begin in the fourth quarter of next year," he indicated.

The Head of State emphasized that these measures will generate new direct and indirect jobs, while helping boost tourism and trade for the benefit of Loreto's population.

"With this, we reaffirm the clear political decision to strengthen air connectivity, generate economic and social development, and decentralize transport infrastructure for the benefit of regions," he said.

In addition, the top official noted that an investment worth over US$443 million is being considered to expand Iquitos Airport's operational and commercial capacity with the aim of turning the city into a logistics hub for the Peruvian Amazon.
