Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti on Thursday affirmed that the Government will provide a clear path in the fight against illicit drug trafficking and inter-institutional cooperation in this field, to his successor in office on July 28.

In remarks from Mazamari, in Junin region, Mr. Sagasti said that the population's expectations concerning fight against crime, organized crime, and illicit drug trafficking require firm commitment from all.

"The Transition and Emergency Government has been providing solid support to the National Police so that it can restore public confidence —as it is doing— and reinstate the idea of teamwork," he stated.

This confidence, he noted, is necessary so that police work can be reflected in the capture of criminal gangs and intelligence practices, both to confront and prevent crimes.

According to the Head of State, the Government will soon publish the regulations of Law 31124, aimed at strengthening the fight against drugs and inter-institutional cooperation in this field.

He went on to say that his Government expects to conclude negotiations with the United States over the donation of helicopters, to assist in strengthening Peru's operational capacity against this problem.

"We want to create the conditions for lasting international cooperation in the fight against drugs," the statesman expressed.

Remarks were made from Mazamari, where he participated in a ceremony to present the donation of 17 tons of explosives.

During the ceremony, Sagasti greeted the Sinchis —National Police's special forces in charge of combating illicit drug trafficking and terrorism.
