The President of the Republic, Jose Jeri, on Wednesday stated that the fight against crime requires the commitment of all Peruvians, at a time when the country is at a breaking point in its battle versus criminality.

"We are going to win this war against crime. It involves sacrifices and also requires the commitment not only of the authorities present here but of each and every one of you," he expressed.

The Head of State attended the celebration of the first anniversary of the liberation of Damero B in Gamarra's commercial emporium located in Lima's La Victoria district.

At this event, the top official said that the country is at "a breaking point." Jeri added that if action is not taken now, crime will fully take over.

"I believe that none of those present want that, and neither do I. That is why I am in command at this moment of the fight to confront crime," he asserted.

In this context, the President urged citizens to be assured that Peruvians will win this war, just as they did in the past.

"Rest assured, you are not alone. The government is now present and is coordinating with each and every one of you. We will not lose this war; we will win it. We have done it before, and we will do it again," he stated.

The top official indicated that the war against common delinquency and organized crime is changing day by day, as are the territorial and intelligence plans of law enforcement agencies, in response to criminals' reactions.

As part of this strategic shift, he announced that the Council of Ministers will approve complementary measures to update the state of emergency declared in Metropolitan Lima and Callao region.

"Criminals are under threat. Just as they threatened our tranquility, we are also threatening them. I know they are watching and listening to us through the cameras; we will monitor every move they make, and we will strike at every action they take," he said.

Before the Gamarra merchants gathered for this anniversary, the top official highlighted their hope that the government will do things differently to improve citizen security and lay the foundations for the future.

He also recognized the work and drive of the Gamarra entrepreneurs, which is reflected in having turned the garment center into one of Peru's economic hubs.

President Jeri was accompanied by Ministers Vicente Tiburcio (Interior), Cesar Quispe (Production), as well as La Victoria Mayor Ruben Cano and Gamarra Peru Association Chairwoman Susana Saldaña.
