The Peruvian Government laments the deaths that occurred during the protests in Puno and will send a high-level commission to insist on dialogue and bring humanitarian aid, Prime Minister Alberto Otarola said on Monday night.

In a statement delivered together with State ministers at the Government Palace, Otarola asked the Attorney General's Office to investigate the acts of violence that have claimed the lives of 12 people.

The Cabinet chief affirmed that the Government will restore internal order in Puno and insisted that the goal of the Executive Branch is to defend the peace and tranquility of 33 million Peruvians.

The government official mentioned that today violent organizations committed an organized, systematic act of vandalism against the rule of law and institutions in Puno. The aim was to take over the Juliaca Airport to the detriment of the population.

"Today, more than 9,000 people approached the Juliaca airport and around 2,000 of them launched an all-out attack against the National Police and the facilities, using homemade weapons loaded with double charges of gunpowder, thereby creating an extreme situation," he said.

The Prime Minister commented that the report on the events "documents the deaths of compatriots, which of course we lament, deaths that show a direct responsibility of those who want to perpetrate a coup d'état in the country.

"This is a hangover from the coup d'état in the country, those instigators and violent actors who could not weaken the Peruvian State or break democracy and wanted to demolish public facilities during the riot that began on December 7 last year, and a new step has been taken today," he added.

Otarola emphasized that, in the face of the unfortunate events and the unfortunate loss of human lives in Puno, he urged the Attorney General's Office to investigate these deaths, which affect and move all Peruvians.
