Peru's Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Wednesday affirmed that the first batch of the COVID-19 vaccines will be principally used to protect those who care for us, that is to say, to health care workers across the country.

In an interview with Piura-based Cutivalu radio station, the high-ranking official explained that the implementation of the vaccination process —once the doses arrive— will be gradual: The vaccines will first reach the warehouse and then will be distributed throughout the national territory.

"We will have a gradual vaccination. The staff on the frontline of healthcare will be the priority in the first phase and then, the vaccines will gradually become available to the population," she explained.

The Cabinet chief pointed out that the first batch includes a COVID-19 vaccine —from the Chinese laboratory Sinopharm— that requires two doses, which is similar to what occurs in other laboratories, with which Peru is in advanced negotiations.

Additionally, the Prime Minister remarked that the vaccines will not be longer shipped via KLM, as it has suspended its flights to China.

However, DHL —which is responsible for the vaccine distribution— is looking for another airline. Therefore, the first batch may arrive a day earlier or later than scheduled.

National situation

When asked about the situation across the country as a result of the second wave of COVID-19, the high-ranking official warned that no region is under moderate alert.

Therefore, she reiterated her call for citizens to continue to follow the basic safety measures, such as the use of face masks, frequent hand washing, and physical distancing.
