Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Juan Carlos Mathews on Tuesday highlighted the progress registered by domestic and inbound tourism during 2023, which had a favorable impact on Peruvian economy.

"Inbound tourism (in Peru) jumped from 2 million foreign visitors in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2023, while in the case of domestic tourism the growth was greater, going from 27 million trips to 37 million trips within the country," he said as a prelude to Fitur 2024 that opens in Madrid, Spain, on Wednesday.

Nonetheless, the Cabinet member acknowledged that it is always a challenge to reach the indicators that had been registered by the sector during the pre-pandemic year, that is, in 2019.

"This 2024 is a year of very good expectations. The relaunch of the Marca Peru (Peru Brand), to take place tomorrow, will attract plenty of attention," Mathews said in remarks to Andina news agency.

The high-ranking official added that international tourists recognize Peru as a diverse destination, as a place of interest.

"They (tourists) don't say it just because they liked Peruvian cuisine or a particular place, but because they visit us regularly and share their experience," he remarked.

Perspective

In the case of domestic tourism, the ministry's idea is to register 43 million trips.

"These are moderate scenarios, but we are evaluating performance every fortnight to get to know what needs to be boosted in order to improve results," Mathews stated.

To this end, different types of tourism are also being promoted, such as those linked to digital-nomads, meetings, film destinations, bird watching, among others, he added.

On the other hand, Minister Mathews underscored that Spain is the main source of tourists in Europe for Peru and the fifth-largest country worldwide.

In 2023, Peru welcomed 101,520 Spanish tourists, a 7% increase compared to the previous year.
