Peru's Justice Min: Pedro Castillo committed offense by posting letter on Twitter

14:55 | Lima, Apr. 5.

Peruvian Justice Minister Jose Tello on Wednesday reported that ex-President Pedro Castillo —an inmate at Lima's Barbadillo Prison— committed an offense by posting a letter on social media.

In this sense, the government official indicated that Castillo received a sanction over said offense, as a result of the disciplinary measure against him, in which his right to defense was respected.

As is known, this disciplinary measure was initiated on January 26 following the publication of a letter on Twitter —an act prohibited because Castillo is under the ordinary closed prison regime, Tello explained.

"This procedure has concluded that he is responsible; he has violated a criminal law and obviously must be punished with 15 day-ban on having contact with someone other than his lawyers," he said in remarks to TVPeru.

Minister Tello indicated that this procedure took a long time because the due process was respected, indicating that he exercised his right to defense at all times.

Last Tuesday, the sanction was announced by the Barbadillo Prison's Penitentiary Technical Council, which determined that the disciplinary sanction, meaning limitation of communications with the outside world, be ordered for a period of 15 days —in accordance with the provisions of the Criminal Enforcement Code's Article 30.

This measure implies the restriction of visits from relatives and friends during the aforementioned period of time.

However, it does not prevent the entry of lawyers in the exercise of his right to defense or his participation in jurisdictional hearings.
