Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea affirmed that, as part of the agreements reached at the ministerial meeting of Andean Community member countries, a bi-border control mechanism will be established immediately.

These remarks were delivered on Monday evening in an interview with Canal N, in which he emphasized that efforts will be made to strengthen the presence of law enforcement agencies in border areas so that continuous patrols are carried out in a coordinated manner.

"It has been agreed to strengthen the border points. This means more (police) presence because all borders are porous (...). In addition to continuous patrols, a bi-border control mechanism will be established immediately," the minister said.

Among other measures, he noted that joint operations and information exchange will be carried out to combat drug trafficking and arms trafficking in border areas so that interventions can be carried out promptly.

"Specifically, regarding the fight against drug trafficking, joint operations and exchange of information and interdiction will be carried out," the government official stated.

"The idea is to carry out actions and prevent them (people) from passing from one side to another and, eventually, intervene them in the most rapid manner, classifying the crimes in each case and seeking the progressive systematization of qualification and penalty," he added.

Moreover, Gonzalez-Olaechea reported that agreements have been reached in 10 fields, such as border actions, immigration cooperation, customs, the fight against illicit drug trafficking, coordinated operations, intelligence cooperation, arms trafficking, in addition to cooperation in penitentiary matters and training against transnational organized crime.

The Cabinet member explained that the meeting also addressed "the Andean security network, in which an Andean database will be created, regarding people who are being prosecuted, in order to have common data, so that countries can be warned of possible people who —whether they are from the community or not— want to set foot on the Andean soil of the four countries."
