Peruvian Defense Minister Jorge Chavez Cresta held a bilateral meeting with the U.S. Southern Command Commander, General Laura Jane Richardson, to strengthen bilateral ties.

At the meeting, they were joined by Peruvian deputy ministers; Joint Command of the Armed Forces Chief, Army General Manuel Gomez de La Torre; as well as the general commanders of the Peruvian Army, Air Force, and Navy.

Also present at the event were U.S. Embassy Chargé d'Affaires, John McNamara, and Defense Attaché, COL Jennifer Jones.

"I extend the most cordial welcome to General Laura Richardson, Chief of the United States Southern Command, and her entire delegation," Minister Chavez Cresta expressed.

"This visit will strengthen our bilateral ties, in the same way as our visit to Washington D.C. did," he added at the beginning of this activity.

Likewise, the Peruvian government official thanked the North American country for its support and highlighted the good bilateral ties that have allowed various Defense sector-related activities to be held.

"Our close defense cooperation includes joint exercises, disaster risk management, technology and training. We appreciate the support from the United States Military Assistance Advisory Group," Chavez Cresta said.

"This meeting with senior staff of the Defense Ministry and the Armed Forces reflects our high priority in bilateral cooperation. I am convinced that his visit and this meeting will contribute to further strengthening ties between our nations," he added.

Also as part of the bilateral meetings agenda, Minister Chavez Cresta and Commander Richardson participated in the discussion panel "Women, Peace, and Security," at which they addressed the commitment to the inclusion of women in the Armed Forces and UN peacekeeping missions.

The events took place in the Peruvian capital, Lima, on Thursday.
