Peru: Wall of possible Inca origin found during landslide removal in Cusco

10:24 | San Jeronimo (Cusco region), Apr. 16.

A wall, apparently of Inca origin, was discovered during the removal of earth and rocks in the Angostura sector, located southeast of the city of Cusco, within San Jeronimo district's jurisdiction, where a landslide occurred.

The Decentralized Directorate of Culture in Cusco (DDC Cusco) reported that the small segment, of apparent pre-Hispanic origin, lies about 100 meters from an area where a landslide was recorded and where land leveling is underway.

It is located about 200 meters from the boundary of the Sillkichani archaeological site.

According to the authority, permanent monitoring of the activities in the area is in place, noting that the work has authorization from the San Jeronimo District Municipality's environmental office.

"According to the technical verification, these interventions are located outside the boundary polygon of the Sillkichani archaeological site," the entity stated, adding that no impact on cultural heritage has been identified.

"Similarly, a review of the databases of the Decentralized Directorate of Culture in Cusco confirms that the intervention area does not intersect with registered pre-Hispanic roads," it noted.

Regarding the wall with finely carved elements, officials stated that "this feature has not been affected, and immediate measures have been adopted to prevent any approach or alteration."

However, authorities ordered continuous monitoring by specialized personnel, as well as coordination with the Qhapaq Ñan technical team to carry out a detailed evaluation to determine the nature of this wall and establish the corresponding provisional protection measures.

Finally, the DDC Cusco stated that it guarantees the protection and conservation of cultural heritage through monitoring actions and inter-institutional coordination, especially in areas adjacent to archaeological assets, ensuring that all interventions are carried out with full respect for historical heritage.
