Central Reserve Bank (BCR) Governor Julio Velarde agreed to remain at the helm of the institution at the request of President-elect Keiko Fujimori, who asked him to stay on in the post for the next five years when she takes office on July 28.

Fujimori Higuchi met with Velarde on Monday afternoon.

Within this framework, the president-elect stressed that his work leading the BCR has delivered very successful results in inflation management and monetary stability.

"That is why I wanted to come and ask him to stay on for five more years. I believe this news—which we hope he will be able to announce today or in the coming days—will be welcomed by Peruvians, as well as by the financial institutions that value and applaud the outstanding work of the BCR under Julio Velarde's leadership," she said.

In response to the proposal, Velarde said he felt honored by the offer.

"Under different circumstances, I might perhaps not have accepted, but I accept with great pleasure. I intend to devote myself as fully as possible to carrying out the task you are entrusting to me," he replied.

Fujimori Higuchi said she had not expected such a prompt response, but was extremely pleased by the clarity, firmness, and manner in which he had made the decision.

"It is great news for Peru," she expressed.

Keiko Fujimori said that, under the new bicameral Congress, the Presidency of the Republic has the power to nominate four members of the BCR board for appointment, including the institution's governor.

During the joint statement following their meeting, Velarde also congratulated Fujimori on her election and thanked her for visiting the BCR.

"It is a courtesy we deeply appreciate," he pointed out.
