Peru to receive Pacific Alliance Pro-Tempore Presidency on Aug 1

Peru will on Tuesday receive the Pro-Tempore Presidency of the Pacific Alliance in a special ceremony to be held in the Chilean capital, Santiago.

On behalf of the Peruvian State, Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi will receive this post from Chile, which received it from Mexico on June 28.

On that occasion,

Pacific Alliance member countries, gathered in Santiago, made the decision to hand over the Pro-Tempore Presidency of this regional bloc to Peru as of August 1, 2023.

Minister Gervasi said this decision reaffirms the importance of preserving the bloc as a mechanism for economic, trade, and cooperative integration.

In her Address to the Nation on Peru's Independence Anniversary, President Dina Boluarte announced that her administration will seek to relaunch and turn the Pacific Alliance into a determining actor on the international stage, with the aim of achieving concrete benefits for the populations of those countries that comprise said bloc, including Peru.

According to international relations analyst Juan Velit, during Peru's Pro-Tempore Presidency, the Pacific Alliance will take the first steps to become a decisive actor in the international arena.

Last Monday, the bloc's National Coordinators met in a hybrid format (face-to-face and virtual) as a prelude to the transfer of the Pro-Tempore Presidency to Peru, which will take place today, August 1.

The National Coordinators also received reports on the Work Plans of the Technical Groups for August 2023-March 2024; while the National Trade Coordinators received reports from the Additional Protocol committees, subcommittees, and working groups.

About the PA

As is known, the Pacific Alliance (PA) is an economic and development initiative among four member nations (Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru).

This bloc constitutes an integration area to boost growth, as well as to achieve the free movement of goods, services, capital, and people.
