14:02 | Lima, Jun. 4.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Thursday highlighted the fact that 76,228 Peruvians managed to recover and defeat the new coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country. The amount is equivalent to 42% of the 183,198 cases registered to date.

At a press conference, the Head of State stressed that this is an important figure in the fight against the pandemic.

After mentioning that 1,135,831 tests have been conducted for the detection of COVID-19, the top official said that patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU) currently total 1,005.

In this sense, the goal —in the short term— is to have 1,500 ICU beds and 2,000 available by the end of June.

Regarding hospitalized patients, the statesman reported that they total 9,063 nationwide.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Thursday marks the eighty-first day of mandatory social isolation in Peru.
