Peru: President condemns violence in La Libertad region

The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Thursday condemned the acts of violence recently committed in Peru's northern La Libertad region, adding that the police agents who disobeyed the prohibition on the use of firearms will be punished.


In this sense, the Head of State indicated that Congress passed the agrarian promotion law, which does not satisfy any of the parties involved. 

"(Thus,) I will convene the National Agreement Forum in order to discuss the future of the farming sector and other measures," he wrote on Twitter.


Likewise, the top official called for an urgent session of the Council of Ministers, with the participation of La Libertad Governor Manuel Llempen to address the situation and other measures.


The statesman went on to add he will convene the Board of Congress, political parties' spokespersons, as well as representatives of workers, businesspeople, civil society, and academic institutions to inform them about the measures to be adopted.


"A few hours prior to the end of 2020, a year that has changed our lives, I want to thank the Peruvian men and women who, from the front line in the battle against COVID-19, continue fighting to safeguard our lives and health," he concluded.
