In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the work of health staff and medical professionals in general has distinguished itself for their dedication and commitment while assuming the great responsibility of taking care of and looking after people who fell ill after catching the virus, Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti said on Wednesday.

In a statement, Mazzetti lamented the death of 256 doctors due to COVID-19, adding that, to date, 62 are hospitalized and many of them are receiving mechanical ventilation.

"We acknowledge their example and commitment. Peru recognizes the group of professionals and technicians who lost their lives to save that of others," the minister pointed out.

She went on to say that, to date, 949,391 people infected with COVID-19 have already been discharged.

In addition, she noted that Minsa pays tribute to the other health professionals and technicians who have been working with the same commitment.

Before the pandemic —she reported— 32,072 doctors used to work in the public health system, with all of them doing so at their workplace and, as of November this year, 20,756 have performed in-person work, that is, 65% of all medical professionals in the public health system.

"The difference is explained by the fact that, in some cases, doctors perform remote work, while in others they take a leave of absence," the Cabinet member explained.

On the other hand, she recalled that —given the health and social impact of the pandemic— Minsa has hired medical professionals under the COVID-19-related Service Administrative Contract (CAS) regime.
