The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Thursday called on Peruvians to stand united to resume the urgent national agenda, including the advancement of the COVID-19 vaccination process and economic revival, and giving priority to the most vulnerable.

He added that the agenda also contemplates measures to strengthen the agriculture sector and a return to in-person school classes.

"Together we will overcome the pandemic and the threats the country faces. We were forged in adversity, and we have managed to win. We have always shown courage and determination," he pointed out.

The country's top official stated that the Battle of Ayacucho is one of the most significant events in the history of Peru as it was the last armed confrontation that led to Peru's independence.

He thus highlighted the role played by the Army back then and the one it continues to play today, for example, in the face of the pandemic, in which it has been on the front line of the fight.

Fight against terrorism and drug trafficking

Additionally, the Peruvian leader highlighted the Army's role in the fight against terrorist remnants, who have joined forces with drug traffickers in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM).

"We have to win this war; we will not stop until we eliminate them (terrorism and drug trafficking) completely. We have to make this happen in the not too distant future," he emphasized.
