The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Tuesday asked mayors to join a crusade against crime, since security is very important to guarantee economic development and reactivation in the country.

During the Executive Meeting with Municipal Associations of Lima, the Head of State indicated that another fundamental issue is to deliver education and health services so as to improve citizens' quality of life.

"Now, it is up to us, from these spaces, to undertake a tougher and more cohesive crusade in terms of the fight against crime; there are important cities, in the country's interior zones, where mayors have committed to strengthen the Serenazgo (municipal police) space and support the National Police this way," he indicated.

In this sense, the top official stated that mayors can also organize neighborhoods and neighborhood councils so as not to surrender to crime.

Moreover, Mr. Castillo announced that the issue of insecurity will be discussed at the Council of Ministers session this Wednesday, since "criminals will not be allowed to continue being up to their old tricks" in the main Peruvian cities.

"The health problem in the country is structural; there are mayors who need the presence of the State. I want to ask you, and today we call on you, to undertake a great crusade for the return to face-to-face (classes), and so that the appropriate spaces can be relied on from the municipality," he said.

In this sense, the Head of State reported that the possibility of expanding capacity limits at various institutions and social spaces is being assessed. Thus, he requested the support of mayors, in addition to helping promote the public infrastructure works needed by the population.

Lastly, President Castillo affirmed that these meetings with mayors should also be held in a decentralized manner so as to learn first-hand about the needs and problems of citizens.
